Team Role FAQs: Roles and Skills
(Return to Team Role FAQs)
When I complete the MTR-i questionnaire, does it tell me what role I’m good at?
No.
To answer this question fully, it is important to identify the difference between:
- the role being performed
- natural or preferred role
- skill/competence
The MTR-i is an indicator of the role you are are currently performing in the team. It doesnt say how well you are doing it, nor does it say whether you like it or not. In fact, you can prefer a role and be no good at it, or not prefer a role but be excellent at it.
For example, Gwyneth Paltrow is excellent at playing English women in films such as Sliding Doors or Shakespeare in Love. In fact, her accent is more ‘English’ than most residents and citizens of England. But as a US citizen, her natural/preferred accent is American.
In a similar way, team leaders and members may undertake roles that are not their natural preference, but they can still be good at them. Competence is often a matter of training and practice. And whilst there might be a general tendency for people to build up skills in the roles they prefer, it is not a hard and fast rule.
